ASWB Exam Tips That Actually Help

Simple habits for studying and answering questions, from a Florida LCSW.

1. Read the question stem twice before the options

Many missed questions aren't about missing knowledge. They come from misreading what's being asked. As you read, ask yourself:

  1. Who is my client? (The individual? The family? An agency?)
  2. What setting am I in, and what's my role?
  3. What exactly is being asked? Look for words like FIRST, NEXT, BEST, MOST, or "except."

Try saying the question back in your own words, then look at the options.

2. Study ethics by applying it, not memorizing it

Values and Ethics is the largest content area (about 35% of the Masters exam and 36% of the Clinical exam), and it shows up inside other questions too. Practice saying what you'd actually do about:

When an answer feels wrong, ask: "Which value or standard does this go against?"

3. Review practice questions the right way

  1. Read the rationale, even when you got it right. Was it the right reason, or a lucky guess?
  2. Figure out why each wrong option is wrong. That's where the exam's way of thinking starts to click.
  3. Notice your patterns and keep a short list of areas to revisit.
  4. Study by weight. More time on bigger content areas, but don't skip any.

4. Practice under time

You'll have about 2 minutes per question. Timed practice sets at home make exam-day pacing feel familiar. See the ASWB exam format for details.
