What the ASWB Exam Actually Looks Like

The basics

• 122 multiple-choice questions, with 4 hours to finish.
• 110 are scored. The other 12 are unscored "pretest" questions ASWB is trying out, and you can't tell which ones they are.
• It's pass/fail, based only on the 110 scored questions.
• There are three content areas: Values and Ethics, Assessment and Planning, and Intervention and Practice.

What to do with this: if a question seems strange or impossible, it might be a pretest item. Make your best choice and move on. Don't let one question shake you.

Pacing: about 2 minutes a question

4 hours for 122 questions works out to about 2 minutes per question. That's enough time, as long as you don't get stuck.

• Do a time check at the halfway mark. Around question 61, you want to be near the 2-hour point.
• Don't wrestle with one question. Pick your best answer and keep going.
• Take the optional break. Stand up, stretch, drink some water.
• Practice timed at home so the real pace feels familiar.

It's a known, predictable test. Knowing the shape of it lets you spend your energy on the questions themselves.
